Since he was a child, Malin Kundang wanted to be a rich man. Thus was because he came from poor family. he lived in the fisherman village in Padang, West Sumatra. Most of people there lived under poverty line. The wealth he had only great love and affection from his mother.

His father had died long time ago and his his mother, Mande Rubayah, worked hard to fill their daily needs.
"Mother, someday when I grow up, I want to sail along somewhere. I will try my luck to reach success," Malin Kundang said to his mother.

When Malin Kundang was entering his teenage, a big ship docked in the beach near his house. Malin was very amazed to see it. On that day, he permitted to his mother to follow the ship. Mande Rubayah originally did not allow him.
"This is a good chance for me, Mom," Malin Kundang said.
"I am not sure the ship will transit here again someday," he added.

Finally, she gave him permission heavy-heartedly. Her tears flowed her cheek when she was accompanying Malin Kundang entered the ship. She was not forgotten to give Malin with rice. When the ship was leaving the beach, Mande Rubayah weaved her hands with weeping till the ship vanished from her view.

Years went so fast.
Mande Rubayah used to wait for Malin in the edge of the beach everyday. Nevertheless, there was bi big ship transit in that beach and she never got clear information about Malin Kundang.

Mande Rubayah grew old rapidly, but she got information from a ship captain that Malin had married to a beautifull girl, the daughter of a rich businessman. How happy Mande Rubayah was, she then prayed with the intention that Malin will safe and come back to her soon.
"Your mother had grown old, Malin. Come home soon...," she whimpered.

Her prayer was granted.
One day, there was a big and luxurious ship transit in the beach. Many peoples came to welcome that ship. That was Malin Kundang's ship. Mande Rubayah became more contented person in this situation. She trampled on the crowd just to meet Malin, her beloved son.

On the ship, Malin Kundang stood up with his beautifull and glamorous wife.
"Malin, my son..," Mande Rubayah screamed with lung at him.
Her tears flowed down but deep in her hearth she was very happy. However, Malin Kundang saw her intensely. His wife spat when she was looking at the old lady,
"Cuih, Is she really your mother? Why did you lie to me? You have ever said that your mother is a rich woman, haven't you?" How embarrassed he was with his wife.
Besides, Malin Kundang and his wife saw how bad and dirty the clothes of the old lady.

To be a stone.
To conceale his embarrassment, he said, "No, she is not my mother."
Afterwards, he expelled the old lady roughly, "Hi, the old and dirty woman, go away from me. My mother is not poor like you," he even kicked the pld lady when she was holding his leg.

Therefore, Malin Kundang asked his crews to prepare for sailing again. How desperate his mother was. She wept to God, "Oh my God, if he is really my son, I will your fairness of this situation.."

Not long after that, the rain and storm fell heavily. Malin Kundang's ship was seized and broken into pieces by thunderstorm. The pieces of the ship then spread to the edge of the beach. When the storm had subsided, there was a stone seems like a man in the side of beach. That was the body of Malin Kundang who had cursed to be a stone.
